Hennadii Shapovalov has been reassigned to a key international role, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed him on Jan. 19 to coordinate military aid efforts with international partners in Wiesbaden, Germany, home to NATO’s Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) headquarters.
Shapovalov, who had led Ukraine’s Southern Command since April 2024, has built an extensive military career, rising from a tank platoon commander to Brigadier General.
His new position reflects Ukraine’s strategic push for closer defense cooperation with NATO and Western allies.
The military leader expressed pride in being part of a strong, coordinated, and highly motivated team of professionals.
"It was an honor to serve as the commander of the Southern Operational Command—a powerful military unit that has bravely and selflessly defended Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty since the first days of Russia’s war," Shapovalov highlighted.
He also thanked his colleagues for their dedication, resilience, and commitment to Ukraine’s defense.
"I am confident that you will continue to fulfill your military duty with honor, strengthening the glory of the Ukrainian army and bringing our victory closer!" he added.
