Tens of thousands of Ukrainians still missing since full-scale Russian invasion

Since the creation of the Unified Register of Missing Persons in Special Circumstances, information on more than 70,000 missing Ukrainians has been recorded.

As of Dec. 26, approximately 10,000 of them have been identified as either alive and returned home or deceased. Active searches continue for the remaining persons on the list.

On Oct. 29, Deputy Interior Minister Leonid Tymchenko reported that more than 1,700 children had been registered as missing in Ukraine.

The Internal Ministry became the primary body as of Oct. 1, 2023, responsible for searching for Ukrainians missing under special circumstances.

Deputy Head of Ukraine’s National Police, Andrii Nebytov said on March 28 that since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, the number of people reported missing in Ukraine has quadrupled to 50,150.
