Russia’s war losses 

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russia’s front-line advances have slowed in the first four months of 2025, despite continued high casualty rates. On average, Russian forces lose 99 soldiers for every kilometer of Ukrainian territory captured.

A joint BBC and Mediazona investigation published on May 5 estimated that at least 45,287 Russian troops were killed in 2024, making it the deadliest year for Russia’s military in Ukraine.

On May 17, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that since the beginning of 2025, Ukrainian forces have destroyed 1,159 Russian tanks and 2,510 armored vehicles.
