Ukrainian athlete Petro Shukalovych has died defending his country from Russian invaders on the front lines, Race Project team reported on Instagram on May 21.
Shukalovych was a three-time winner of the Mohrytsia Eco Trail and a national marathon champion.
He first joined the fight in 2015, serving in the 4th Serhii Mykhalchuk's Rubizh Operational Brigade. Over the past two years, he sustained two injuries — but both times, he returned to the front.
He is survived by his wife, who also serves in the Armed Forces, and their little daughter.
