UN Security Council to address escalating Russian missile raids and port strikes

Sybiha specifically highlighted the deadly double-tap drone strike against the Soniachna Halereia shopping mall in Kryvyi Rih, which killed 16 people and injured 130 others, including more than 20 children.

The minister stressed that the Kryvyi Rih attack serves as further proof that Russia deliberately targets civilian sites, families, and first responders.

Security Council session will also address Russian attacks on Ukrainian Black Sea ports and the disruption of seaborne grain exports. According to Sybiha, Moscow's naval campaign deepens the global food crisis and endangers millions of people beyond Ukraine's borders.

Kyiv expects a resolute, outcome-oriented discussion from the UN Security Council, calling on the international community to take concrete steps to halt Russian strikes, protect the civilian population, and uphold international peace and security.

On Aug. 21 at approximately 4:30 p.m., Russian forces struck the Soniachna Halereia shopping mall — the largest in Kryvyi Rih — with two strike drones. The attack killed 16 people and injured 140 others.

On Aug. 22, Minister of Internal Affairs Ivan Vyhivskyi announced that law enforcement issued a formal notice of suspicion to the director of a supermarket operating inside the shopping center.

"Despite warnings from local authorities to halt operations during air raid alerts, the facility continued to operate. A substantial number of the deceased were discovered at that exact location," Vyhivskyi explained.

Commenting on the Kryvyi Rih mall strike, Andrii Kovalenko, Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, stated that the aggressor state is "raising the stakes of terror," necessitating that civilians and authorities across rear oblasts "fundamentally reevaluate their approach to safety protocols."
