Unidentified drones hit a Russian ammunition depot in Kursk Oblast, Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, reported on April 15.

"In Kursk, unidentified drones struck a Russian ammunition depot," his statement said.

He did not provide further details.

The Russian side was yet to comment on the incident.

On the night of April 15, the city of Kursk came under a massive drone attack. Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed that 109 drones were allegedly shot down over Kursk Oblast, and another six over Voronezh, Moscow, Bryansk, and Oryol oblasts.

On April 14, Ukrainian forces struck a Russian Strela-10 air defense system in Kursk Oblast that attempted to shoot down a Ukrainian reconnaissance drone.

On April 11, Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SSO) reported capturing 14 Russian soldiers — including three officers — in the same area over recent days.

Situation in Kursk Oblast

On March 14, US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, claiming that “thousands” of Ukrainian troops were allegedly surrounded and called on Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to “spare their lives.” Putin responded by promising that Russia would allegedly “guarantee life and decent treatment” if Ukrainian forces surrendered.

Ukraine's General Staff refuted Trump’s claim that Ukrainian forces were encircled by Russian occupiers in Kursk Oblast. According to the General Staff, Ukrainian Defense Forces conducted a tactical regrouping and repositioned to more advantageous defensive lines.

On March 14, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Kursk operation fulfilled its objectives, although he admitted the situation was “very difficult.”

In a March 15 report, analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted that Russian forces continued offensive actions in Kursk Oblast but had not yet pushed Ukrainian forces out.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said that Ukrainian troops in Kursk had relocated to more favorable defensive positions. On March 18, Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukrainian troops were not “encircled” in Kursk and were maintaining control over the situation.

On April 3, Zelenskyy said that combat on Russian territory remains one of Ukraine’s greatest achievements in the course of the full-scale war.
