European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called on Chinese leader Xi Jinping to exert influence on Moscow after fresh nuclear threats from the Kremlin, German media outlet Tagesschau reported on May 6.

Von der Leyen noted that China played a crucial role in the "de-escalation of Russia’s irresponsible nuclear threats" in the past. She believes Beijing will continue to restrain Russia in light of the "current nuclear threats."

According to her, China should also help prevent the supply of dual-use goods to Russia, which are used to manufacture weapons later used against Ukraine, adding that this is important for EU-China relations.

Earlier on May 6, Moscow announced that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has instructed the General Staff to prepare for military exercises involving the use of tactical nuclear weapons.

Later, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed the exercises are related to Western statements about readiness to send troops to Ukraine.
