Xi Jinping to make rare U.S. visit for White House summit with Trump — Politico

Xi will not attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York in the trip.

According to the outlet, the Chinese leader is expected to arrive in the U.S. late on the evening of Sept. 23. Primary negotiations with Trump are scheduled for Sept. 24 in Washington, with Xi slated to depart the country on Sept. 25.

The White House confirmed the Chinese leader's scheduled Sept. 24 visit to Washington, though officials declined to comment on additional events on his itinerary.

The General Debate of the UN General Assembly will convene on Sept. 22 in New York. Diplomats previously speculated that Xi might combine the Washington summit with appearances at UN events, but Politico confirmed those plans have been ruled out.

Beijing's lack of interest in the UN session is further evidenced by the absence of an advance delegation in New York, which routinely coordinates visits for the Chinese leader.

Xi last delivered an in-person address at the UN General Assembly in New York in 2015 during the organization's 70th anniversary.

Trump and Xi met in May 2026 in Beijing. Following those talks, the U.S. president noted that Russia's war against Ukraine was among the topics discussed.
