Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held his first meeting with newly appointed Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi to discuss appointing acting foreign and defense ministers, Zelenskyy said on Telegram on July 17.

He said he had discussed with Koretskyi the steps the government will take in the near future, as well as cooperation with Ukraine's international partners.

Zelenskyy also said the prime minister had begun preparing the government's program, which will be presented to both the public and parliament.

"Our approach to governance will be as pragmatic as possible. Every minister and every head of a central government agency will bear personal responsibility for delivering on the priorities that have been set. Serhiy has every opportunity to build a government policy and a team of executive officials capable of strengthening our state," Zelenskyy wrote.

The president said the government's top priority is preparing for the upcoming heating season, including restoring energy infrastructure damaged by Russian strikes.

New government appointments

On July 16, the Verkhovna Rada appointed Serhiy Koretskyi as prime minister, replacing Yuliia Svyrydenko, and approved the new Cabinet, excluding the foreign and defense ministers, whose nominations have not yet been submitted to parliament by the president.

Acting Security Service of Ukraine chief Yevhen Khmara will serve as acting defense minister in place of Mykhailo Fedorov until the president formally nominates him for the post.

The appointments of the defense and foreign ministers are expected to take place after Aug. 18, when the Verkhovna Rada resumes plenary sessions.
