The tragedy in the Darnytskyi district occurred in a massive overnight and morning attack on May 14, when Russia targeted Kyiv with cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones. Preliminary reports suggest a Kh-101 cruise missile struck the residential building, causing an entire section to collapse. Among the children killed were three girls, aged 12, 15, and 17.

Additional damage was reported in the Holosiivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Obolonskyi, and Dniprovskyi districts. The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine noted that Russia launched 56 missiles and 675 drones during the assault, with Kyiv serving as the primary target.

May 15 has been declared a Day of Mourning in Kyiv.
