Ukrainian boxer Vasyl Lomachenko beat his U.S. opponent, Jamaine Ortiz, in an unanimous decision in a bout on Oct. 29, after having returned to boxing following a stint as a Ukrainian defender.
Ortiz took the center of the ring from the very beginning of the match, while his Ukrainian counterpart started with reconnaissance.
As a result, Lomachenko missed a punch to his eye, but he began to apply increasing pressure starting from the third round, managing to land a few hits to the face and forcing Ortiz to retreat – once managing to get Ortiz’s legs to visibly wobble.
Still, Ortiz took control in the sixth round, and kept trying to find success with his left jab.
Lomachenko chased Ortiz for much of the period towards the championship rounds and took a unanimous decision win at the end of the fight: 115-113, 116-112, and 117-111.
Lomachenko joined Ukraine’s Territorial Defence Forces in his home town Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, walking away from a major title unification bout.
