GSC Game World’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 hits 6 million players worldwide
GSC Game World has announced a new milestone for its hit game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, which was released a few months ago, according to a statement on the game's official X page on March 4.
"The Zone has never been this loud! We’re celebrating 6 million stalkers who have ventured into S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Six million! A number that's hard to grasp, but it's a reality thanks to you. We’re incredibly grateful and proud that each of you has left your mark on the Zone," the developers wrote on the game's official X account.
The achievement is impressive, but player engagement has dropped significantly in recent weeks.
Player count drops over 90% on steam
At launch in November 2024, the game saw a peak of 121,000 concurrent players on Steam. However, recent data shows that in the past 24 hours, the peak player count was just 8,161, while the weekly high barely exceeded 11,000 players.
This decline mirrors the typical pattern of single-player story-driven games, where players don’t often return after completing the main campaign and additional content.
Following the same trend as starfield
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 isn’t the only major release to see a rapid player drop. Bethesda’s Starfield, a highly anticipated space RPG, initially attracted 330,000 concurrent players but now struggles to surpass a few thousand active users.
A financial success despite the decline
Despite the drop in active players, the game has already proven to be a financial success. In February, GSC Game World’s founder, Serhiy Hryhorovych, confirmed that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 recouped its development costs within the first 24 hours of sales.
While the exact budget for the game has never been officially disclosed, it was one of the most anticipated releases of the past year and remains a huge commercial success for the studio.
