Explosions in Odesa, reports suggest ballistic missile attack
Explosions hit Odesa, reportedly from a Russian Iskander-M
ballistic missile, local Telegram channels and monitoring groups said on Dec.
14, adding that the threat of further ballistic strikes persists.
Earlier, DTEK announced the cancellation of emergency power
outages in Odesa and Odesa District, which had been implemented following a
large-scale attack on Dec. 13.
Russia’s Dec. 13 massive attack on Ukraine
During the night of Dec. 13, Russia launched dozens of
Shahed drones against Ukraine, followed by a massive morning missile barrage,
including ballistic and cruise missiles. The attack featured Kalibr missiles
fired from the sea and Kh-101 missiles launched from Tu-95MS aircraft. A
MiG-31K jet also fired Kinzhal missiles. Explosions were reported in Odesa,
Lviv Oblast, and Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast.
In Ternopil Oblast, 50% of consumers lost electricity. In
Odesa, public transportation was halted, and water supplies were cut.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the strikes
as primarily targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. He urged international
partners to provide Ukraine with 20 air defense systems.
U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink condemned the
attack, calling it a “barrage of ballistic missiles” against critical
infrastructure, including energy and transportation networks. President
Volodymyr Zelenskyy referred to the assault as one of the largest against
Ukraine’s energy systems.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 94
missiles and 193 drones. Ukrainian air defense shot down 81 missiles and 80
drones.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) noted that the
attack forced five of Ukraine’s nine nuclear power units to reduce output.
