Ukraine’s nuclear generation recovers after Russian strikes — IAEA

Ukraine’s nuclear power plants that remain under government control — Khmelnytskyi, Rivne and South Ukraine — fully restored their capacity after Russian attacks, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported on Nov. 27.
The statement noted that all generating units at the three plants are once again operating at full capacity. Electricity production has returned to previous levels after the strikes, which had forced significant constraints on the facilities’ operations.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said that almost all units are running at maximum output, with the exception of one reactor that is still operating at reduced power. All high-voltage transmission lines damaged during the Russian attacks have also been fully restored.
The IAEA plans to send a mission to inspect a number of critical substations whose condition is essential for the operation of the nuclear plants and overall nuclear safety. This will be the Agency’s sixth mission of this type.
On Nov. 20, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reported a forced reduction in nuclear power output due to damage to electricity transmission systems and the need for preventive measures in the face of new threats.
The IAEA then confirmed that, after the Nov. 19 strikes, three Ukrainian plants had to cut generation and described the situation as worrying.
