Kyiv tests metro service during yellow air alerts to ease transport collapse

Kyiv’s Syretsko-Pecherska "Green" metro line is running without restrictions during yellow air alert levels in a trial run, the city administration announced on Sept. 9.
Trains will follow their standard routes during drone threats (yellow alert). If a red alert is declared, train operations will be halted on open-air elevated sections.
In the event of a red alert, passengers will be required to disembark at underground stations to shelter from danger. Under those circumstances, the Green Line will operate along two separated underground segments: between Syrets and Vydubychi stations [Kyiv right bank stations - ed.], and between Osokorky and Chervonyi Khutir stations [left bank - ed.].
Starting Sept. 10, this operating protocol will take effect permanently, allowing unrestricted transit across the Green Line under yellow threat levels, according to the Kyiv City State Administration.
Subway Operations Adjustments in Kyiv from Sept. 10
On Sept. 6, Kyiv implemented a tiered air-raid alert notification system pursuant to a Cabinet of Ministers directive. Capital residents now receive alerts distinguishing between a yellow level (indicating threats from uncrewed aerial vehicles) and a red level (signifying mass drone raids, missile attacks, or combined strikes).
The Cabinet also recommended permitting Green Line subway operations under yellow alerts amid near-continuous Russian jet-powered drone assaults against Kyiv that began on Aug. 27.
Since the beginning of September, prolonged air alerts and suspended subway transit have triggered near-daily transportation paralysis across the capital.
On Sept. 7, Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that the Syretsko-Pecherska Line will operate without restrictions under the yellow alert level. Vehicular traffic across the Pivdennyi (South) Bridge will likewise be permitted without restrictions during alerts, subject to a 30-minute technical closure immediately following the initial alert announcement and a 30-minute closure following the all-clear signal.
These measures will formally take effect at midnight on Sept. 10. Concurrently, Kyiv will shorten its overnight curfew, which will now run from 1 to 5 a.m.
