Russia loses 1,220 troops, helicopter, air defense system in 24 hours – Ukraine’s General Staff
Russia’s military continues to suffer heavy losses on the battlefield in Ukraine, with 1,220 soldiers, a helicopter, and an air defense system eliminated in the past 24 hours alone, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on May 15.
This brings Russia’s total estimated losses since the start of the full-scale invasion to approximately 970,590 killed and wounded.
In addition to soldiers, Russian forces also lost eight tanks, thirteen armored fighting vehicles, forty-five artillery systems, two multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), one air defense system, 140 tactical-level UAVs, 165 vehicles and fuel trucks, and eight pieces of specialized equipment.

Russia’s battlefield toll
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the pace of Russia’s territorial gains has significantly slowed over the past four months, even as casualty rates remain high. On average, Russian forces reportedly lose 99 soldiers per every kilometer of ground taken.
In a joint investigation by BBC Russia and Mediazona, it was estimated that at least 45,287 Russian troops were killed in 2024 alone — making it the deadliest year for Moscow’s forces in Ukraine so far.
Ukraine’s General Staff earlier reported that since the start of 2025, over 177,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded.
The military war may be swinging in our favor, but the information war continues.
