A fire broke out at the Defense of Sevastopol Panorama Museum in occupied Sevastopol after a drone crashed into the building, in an incident that local reports have linked to the actions of Russian air defense, Crimean Wind wrote on June 10.

The monitoring channel’s subscribers wrote that the drone that fell onto the building housing the Defense of Sevastopol 1854–1855 panorama may have been brought down as a result of Russian air defense activity.

Reports indicated that two anti-aircraft machine-gun positions are located on a hill behind the Historic Boulevard, between the railway station and the panorama museum. The positions are intended to protect the station and South Bay.

Witnesses said that soldiers at these positions had earlier opened fire on drones on multiple occasions, with bullets and debris falling near a public transportation stop by the railway station.

A fire broke out in the museum building following the incident. A source cited by the channel said the flames spread rapidly because firefighting equipment was unable to reach the site quickly. The source noted that the building underwent reconstruction and major renovations in 2023–2024, including the replacement of its roof.

Crimean Wind also criticized a statement by Kremlin-installed official and head of Sevastopol’s occupation administration Mikhail Razvozhayev, who blamed Ukraine for the strike and described it as a “deliberate” attack. At the same time, he made no mention of any possible shortcomings in Russia’s air defense system.

According to the channel, military facilities are located near the museum, and the drone managed to reach central Sevastopol despite the presence of air defense systems, anti-aircraft installations, and mobile fire groups in the area.

The monitoring group earlier reported that mobile fire groups were operating near Cape Fiolent in temporarily occupied Sevastopol at around 7 a.m. because of an aerial threat. The channel also reported two explosions near Sapun Hill, the flight of a drone, and the launch of a missile from a Pantsir air defense system from Fedyukhyn Heights area.

The Defense of Sevastopol 1854–1855 Panorama Museum is dedicated to one of the episodes of the Crimean War of 1853–1856, in which the Russian Empire was defeated by a coalition consisting of the Ottoman Empire, Great Britain, France, and the Kingdom of Sardinia.

The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, which stripped Russia of the right to maintain a military fleet or build fortifications on the Black Sea, which was granted neutral status. The panorama is housed in a specially designed domed pavilion. After suffering damage during World War II, it was partially restored in 1954.
