U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff behaves and looks completely differently in front of Ukrainian and Russian delegations, Financial Times journalist Christopher Miller wrote on X on Dec. 2.

He has drawn attention to Witkoff differences in the behavior and appearance in his post.

In particular, he noted that at the meeting with Ukrainians in Miami, Witkoff appeared unkempt and serious, avoided eye contact, and did not smile.

By contrast, at his meeting with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, Witkoff was clean-shaven, attentive, and wore a broad smile.

He added that he enjoyed a “wonderful walk” around Moscow, which he called a “majestic city.”

On Nov. 30, talks on the peace plan between the Ukrainian and U.S. delegations were held in Miami, Florida.

CNN reported that the delegations discussed a possible scenario under which Ukraine would in practice be unable to join NATO under U.S. leadership because any deal would have to be negotiated directly between NATO member states and Moscow.

Another contentious point was the status of Donetsk Oblast, which also became a subject of heated discussion at the meeting.

On Dec. 2, the Kremlin hosted a meeting between Putin, Witkoff, and Jared Kushner that, according to media reports, lasted five hours. Media outlets later reported that the Russian dictator arrived at the meeting roughly two and a half hours late.

The talks focused on proposals to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, formulated after the Nov. 30 discussions in Florida between the Ukrainian and American delegations on the 28-point peace plan.

After the meeting, Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov said that the sides had not yet reached a compromise on the peace plan.
