Germany’s economy minister Katerina Reiche arrived in Kyiv, Reuters reported on Oct. 24.

“Ukraine is facing its fourth winter during war, and now Russia has stepped up its attacks on Ukraine’s power supply, putting electricity and heating at serious risk this winter,” Reiche said in Kyiv, where she arrived with a business delegation.

She noted that Ukraine needs urgent help to restore and secure energy supplies.

Reiche promised that in her visit to Kyiv she will work to determine how Germany can provide more concrete and effective support in this area.

In addition to preserving and restoring energy infrastructure, the minister also plans to focus on expanding German-Ukrainian cooperation in defense.

“Security policy is always also economic policy,” she stressed, noting that her goal is to bring German and Ukrainian defense companies closer together.

On Oct. 15, at the Ramstein meeting, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced a new large aid package for Ukraine of more than $2 billion.
