How U.S.-made AI Hornet drones paralyze Russian logistics on Pokrovsk front

While Ukrainian Defense Forces have long utilized various "middle-strike" drones to target the enemy's near rear, commanders admit that the introduction of the Hornet has increased the frequency of successful strikes not just incrementally, but in some areas tenfold.
NV journalist Serhii Okunev spent several days with one of the most successful Hornet crews in the Defense Forces — operators from the Omega Special Forces Detachment — to understand exactly why this drone is rewriting the rules of modern attrition.
"A year ago, no one would have believed it"
In a high-intensity war where daily expenditures on both sides run into hundreds of millions of dollars along an active front line exceeding , it seems unusual to credit a handful of operators with shifting the dynamic of an entire sector. Yet, a drone crew within the 1st Separate Special Forces Detachment "Omega" is demonstrating an operational efficiency that earlier eluded entire battalions of unmanned systems.
Omega Special Operations Center functions similarly to a brigade, with its "detachments" acting as highly specialized battalions. The 1st Detachment — unofficially dubbed the "Kyiv" detachment due to its historical home base — is now deployed to the Pokrovsk axis. According to official General Staff reports, this sector continues to see the highest intensity of combat on the entire front. On this grueling line, two young operators going by the call signs Malina and Ziat are using the Hornet to systematically dismantle Russian supply lines.
"At first, there wasn't any immediate awe," says Ziat.
"We treated it like just another piece of kit that needed to be tested in the field. But our attitude started changing during training. We realized how capable this system was. Once we deployed to active combat zones and began launching the Hornet directly at the enemy, it became immediately clear: we were looking at entirely different performance metrics and a new level of efficiency."
These assessments are backed by hard data. In April 2026, while the crew was still refining its workflow, Omega secured first place among all units in the Ukrainian Armed Forces for the number of successful targets hit at a distance of behind the front line. A massive portion of those successful strikes is credited to the Ziat and Malina crew.
"There were days when we worked almost non-stop for ," Malina recalled.
"Stopping to grab a bite to eat or run to the washroom felt like wasted time that could have been spent launching. We had days where we opened our eyes at 5 a.m. and had our first bird in the air within minutes. From there, it was an endless carousel — one launch after another until we hit our physical limits."
Out of concern for operational security, NV cannot publish the exact number of strikes conducted by the Omega crew. However, conservative estimates based on data from neighboring units indicate that in a single day, the Malina and Ziat crew achieved as many successful strikes as a well-known brigade of the Unmanned Systems Forces accomplished in an entire month in the winter of 2026.
This monumental leap in efficiency is corroborated by Chicago, the 1st Detachment's deputy commander for unmanned systems. He confirms the unit now achieves as many successful strikes daily as it previously did in an entire week.
According to Chicago, this explosive performance boost is driven by several key factors. First is the platform itself: the Hornet utilizes built-in artificial intelligence to handle target detection, terminal guidance, and impact in fully automated modes. Second is mass availability and cost. While domestic Ukrainian counterparts of equivalent range can cost up to more and arrive at the front in single-digit quantities, the Hornet is being produced in massive quantities.
However, Chicago stressed that technology is only half the equation:
"I wouldn't link the spike in efficiency solely to the arrival of one specific platform. It is the result of systematic changes. Alongside the Hornets, we've refined our deployment tactics, crews have accumulated massive combat experience, coordination with intelligence units has improved, and decision-making loops have shrunk. The Hornet made a massive contribution because of its reliability and versatility, but crucially, it became part of an already functioning, optimized ecosystem."
In private conversations, the operators admitted that a year ago, they "would not have believed" the scale of destruction they are now delivering in the middle-strike segment.
Hunting "Zebras" on the Donbas Steppes
Operating a middle-strike drone unit in 2026 is a highly hazardous assignment. While the Hornet can cover distances up to — allowing launch teams to position themselves further back from the zero line — the "kill zone" along the front has expanded so drastically that no position within dozens of kilometers of the active combat zone is truly safe.
En route to their launch site, the crew closely monitors the skies using tactical awareness apps and electronic detection devices like Chuyka, which detects nearby enemy reconnaissance drones and can even intercept their video feeds.
Once on-site, setup takes only a few minutes. For a weapon that has taken the Ukrainian front by storm, one might expect the Hornet to look like a futuristic, high-tech aircraft from a sci-fi film. In reality, the drone's body, wings, and tail are made of ordinary molded styrofoam. Its electronic components and payload fit into remarkably small compartments, making it look more like a hobbyist's model airplane kit than a lethal weapon. However, any skepticism vanishes the moment it launches.
The Hornet bypasses electronic warfare blockades along the zero line with relative ease, utilizing automated flight paths. Leveraging hundreds of successful missions, the operators know exactly what altitudes and speeds to utilize to evade Russian air defenses, which are actively hunting the platforms.
"The Russians are trying two things to counter us," Malina explained.
"First, they are painting their vehicles in highly specific camouflage — black and white stripes designed to look like zebras. They believe this visual pattern confuses the drone's AI target acquisition. I won't say too much, but we welcome their painting efforts; they should definitely keep doing it. Second, they are heavily protecting their supply roads with mobile air defense groups and even utilizing short-range SAM systems against the Hornets. How well is that working for them? Well, our strike statistics are the best answer to that question."
To illustrate the point, the operators recount a recent incident. As the Hornet's impact grew too severe for Russian propaganda to ignore, state media broadcast a segment showcasing an "unrivaled" counter-system specifically designed to neutralize the American drone. Within of the broadcast, Omega crew located and destroyed that exact "counter-system" using a Hornet.
On this mission, Russian air defenses once again fail to intercept the drone. The video feed streams clean footage of ruined high-rises in the Pokrovsk sector. However, the front line is not the Hornet's target. Standard, short-range FPV drones handle immediate front-line strikes, whereas the Hornet flies much deeper to intercept Russian transports on supply routes.
Once a military target is spotted deep in the rear, the operator simply issues a "confirm" command and places a cursor over the vehicle. The drone's AI locks onto the target and guides itself autonomously to impact. Even if the driver speeds up or maneuvers erratically, the AI tracking system maintains its lock.
This is where the advantage of mass availability becomes apparent. Unlike more expensive, scarce Ukrainian middle-strike drones — where a single launch requires days of meticulous planning and target verification — the Hornet allows for a continuous "carousel" of strikes. The moment one drone hits its target, the next is already in the air or prepped for launch. This allows operators to conduct continuous "free hunt" patrols along Russia’s most active supply corridors, inflicting catastrophic, compounding losses on their logistics network.
No Quick Fixes: The Industrial Challenge for Ukraine
Can the enemy adapt and nullify this advantage? Chicago doubts that Russian forces can develop an effective counter-strategy in the near term, noting that there are no quick fixes to the Hornet problem for the occupiers.
"As the enemy refines their defense measures, we continuously adapt our tactics, update our software, find technical workarounds, and bypass their jamming," Chicago said.
"We look at their claims of high intercept rates with skepticism. In an information war, both sides inflate their successes. We measure the real effectiveness of a system by the burnt metal on the ground."
Hornet is a prime example of a nimble private startup outperforming established defense giants. The drone is produced by a company backed by Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google and a vocal supporter of Ukraine. The manufacturer operates essentially as a tech startup, having been founded only in 2024 without decades of institutional defense-industry bloat.
"The developers clearly set out to build the most cost-effective tool possible, rather than the most expensive or complex platform," Chicago noted.
"They found the sweet spot between unit cost and combat capability. In a war of attrition, this is everything, because success is measured by your ability to scale production."
This approach stands in stark contrast to other Western drone systems delivered to Ukraine, such as AeroVironment’s Switchblade. When the Switchblade was first announced for Ukraine, expectations were sky-high. Yet, due to a unit cost that is many times higher than the Hornet and highly restricted production scaling, the platform has seen only sporadic, limited use on the battlefield.
However, the Hornet's massive success has also triggered concerns within Ukraine. Taras Chmut, head of the Come Back Alive foundation and a member of the supervisory board of the Defense Procurement Agency, warned on social media that the mass import of cheap Hornets could act as a "killer of Ukrainian middle-strike development."
Industry sources admitted that over the past six months, the availability of the cheap, highly effective Hornet has diverted the attention of major donors and procurement agencies away from contracting domestic Ukrainian drone startups. Combined with Ukraine’s highly restrictive, non-transparent military export regulations — which prevent domestic builders from selling abroad to fund their own R&D — local manufacturers face an existential struggle to compete with subsidized, mass-produced Western alternatives.
