Alexander Lukashenko held an unannounced meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, according to Belarusian state media and Lukashenko's press service on June 29.

According to state media reports, Xi told Lukashenko that China-Belarus relations had reached a “historic high.”

“That is exactly what we discussed with you. And perhaps, to some extent, what we dreamed of before this global cooperation between Belarus and the People’s Republic of China,” Lukashenko replied.

Xi also said China and Belarus should “promote the continuous development of bilateral relations at a high level” and “maintain strategic communication.” He stressed that China supports Belarus in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

Lukashenko arrived in China after holding talks with Vladimir Putin at his Valdai residence last week. The closed-door meeting lasted about five hours.

On June 19, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he was giving Lukashenko seven days to dismantle Russian drone guidance relay stations on Belarusian territory. “If he does not do it, we will,” Zelenskyy said at the time.

On June 24, Zelenskyy said the relay stations used to guide Russian drones from Belarus had stopped operating on June 22. He added that it remained unclear whether the Lukashenko regime had actually dismantled the equipment.

On June 25, following a briefing by Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Zelenskyy said Belarus was completing the construction of road infrastructure and facilities for storing ammunition and fuel along its border with Ukraine.

“Belarus knows what steps it must take to achieve peace. The development of aggression-related border infrastructure on the Belarusian side must be stopped,” Zelenskyy said.
