Chernivtsi Police have detained a 26-year-old man suspected of arson at the humanitarian aid center of the international organization Remar S.O.S., the officers wrote on their website on Dec. 11.
The incident occurred on the night of Dec. 1-2, when the city authorities received reports of burning tents with humanitarian supplies. Following an investigation, police identified and apprehended the suspect, placing him in a temporary detention facility.
A search of his residence uncovered evidence linking him to the crime.
The suspect, who has a history of property crimes, confessed to the act in a recorded statement.
The investigation includes charges under Article 263 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code for illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives. Additional charges under Article 194 for deliberate destruction or damage to property are pending.
Police continue to work on the case as further details emerge.
