Russian advance halted near Severodonetsk, says Luhansk governor
“The Russians suffered significant losses and were forced to retreat near Severodonetsk, Toshkivka, and Oskolonivka,” said Hayday.
“Nevertheless, they remain committed to trying to outflank our forces and cutting off supply routes to Luhansk Oblast.”
Fourteen residential high-rises in Severodonetsk were damaged by artillery fire, Hayday said.
The nearby hamlet of Synetskyi was also heavily damaged, he said.
Across the region, nine buildings were damaged in Hirske, four each in Zolote and Lysychansk, 12 in Vrubivka, and two in Orikhove.
According to Hayday, another bridge between Severodonetsk and Lysychansk was damaged, but there are still routes open between the cities.
The Kremlin is continuing to focus its main thrust of its Donbas offensive on seizing the rest of Luhansk Oblast from Ukraine. If it succeeds, multi-pronged attacks on Sievierodonetsk could cut off pockets of Ukrainian troops in the region from the rest of the country.
Only 5% of Luhansk Oblast still remains under Ukraine’s control.
