Russian forces are preparing a new tactic for their summer and fall offensives, analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) forecast. According to the report, Moscow plans to systematically integrate the use of motorcycles into its war against Ukraine to "offset" the effectiveness of Ukrainian drone operators. Military expert and founder of the Reactive Post volunteer organization, Pavlo Narozhny, explained the potential dangers of this new tactic during an interview with Radio NV.

“[Motorcycle attacks] only look comical on video when they fall, get destroyed, or get hit by drone strikes,” Narozhny said.
“But in reality, a motorcycle that can travel across rough terrain at 50–60, maybe even up to 100 kilometers per hour, is very difficult to catch with a drone. A drone flies at about 150—maybe 200 kilometers per hour, if it’s a professional-grade one with good engines and so on.”

Narozhny noted that it’s much harder to catch moving motorcyclists — especially when they operate in groups and can quickly spread out — compared to infantry moving at just 5–6 kilometers per hour.

“The countermeasure here would either be densely mining the fields so they blow themselves up, or using cluster munitions from artillery, which is expensive,” Narozhny said.
“And it’s very hard to cover all of them with cluster munitions, so they really do pose a serious threat. The Russians understand their effectiveness.”

Besides mining, Narozhny added that deploying barbed wire and battlefield engineering barriers could also work.

“A motorcyclist would have to stop, cut through the barbed wire, and then squeeze through the gap, making them an easier target for artillery, drones, and other strikes,” he said.
“But in any case, this is a pretty dangerous weapon, a dangerous type of transport, and we need to find effective countermeasures against it.”
