Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) disclosed some details of this case.
"SBU officer and his partners demanded $300,000 from an individual under investigation for allegedly organizing illegal border crossings for military-age men," officials wrote.
"In exchange, the official promised to destroy parts of the case file and conceal evidence that had already been collected."
When the target resisted, the SBU officer threatened to escalate the charges and ensure prosecution under harsher criminal articles.
The group was exposed after receiving part of the demanded sum — $72,000.
On July 22, NABU announced suspicions against the senior SBU official in connection with the scheme.
On Sept. 25, NABU reported that SBU had carried out investigative actions against former NABU detectives. These actions are believed to be tied to their earlier work on major corruption cases at state enterprises and government agencies, including SBU itself.
Sources told NV that the searches involved former NABU employees who investigated the cases of Artem Shylo, Borys Kaufman, and Volodymyr Halanternik.
SBU, however, said that the searches were part of an inquiry into alleged abuses in Ukraine’s state railway cargo operations and were not linked to pressure on anti-corruption institutions.
