Elina Svitolina edges Maya Joint in three-set thriller to reach US Open round three — video

In the second round, the Ukrainian world No. 9 overcame the 72nd-ranked Australian across three hard-fought sets.
In the opening set, Joint converted two breaks of serve but surrendered every one of her own service games, allowing Svitolina to claim the opener 6–2.
The second set unfolded in tense fashion, culminating in a tiebreak victory for the Australian. Svitolina had earned a match point during the set but was unable to convert it to seal an early victory.
The Ukrainian reset to clinch the decisive third set 6–4.
The encounter marked the first career head-to-head meeting between Svitolina and Joint.

In the tournament's opening round, Svitolina defeated Argentina's Solana Sierra (WTA No. 87). The Ukrainian will next face Anna Kalinskaya, who is competing under a neutral flag.
