The 25th Ukraine Defense Contact Group (Ramstein-format) meeting on Jan. 9, led by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, will outline Ukraine’s long-term defense strategy through 2027, the U.S. Department of Defense official statement wrote on Jan. 7.

Launched in April 2022, the Ramstein format remains the most critical platform for partner nations working together to provide long-term support for Ukraine.

This meeting will be a landmark event.

Key topics of the meeting

  1. Ukraine’s immediate battlefield needs: Ensuring the supply of air defense systems, artillery ammunition, and armored vehicles.

  2. Long-term defense objectives: Developing plans to build a resilient deterrence force.

  3. Strengthening the defense industry: Coordinating coalition efforts to reinforce Ukraine’s defense production base.

Strategic planning through 2027

During the meeting, Austin will convene leaders from eight coalition groups to draft a strategy aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities through 2027.

The U.S. Department of Defense noted that each coalition within the Ramstein framework focuses on specific aspects of Ukraine’s military potential and is jointly led by two or more NATO countries.
