The situation in the Donbas is extremely difficult, but despite attempts by the Russian invaders to attack the towns of Sloviansk and Sievierodonetsk, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are holding back the enemy's advance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address late on May 21.

According to the president, the Ukrainian military is disrupting Russia's offensive plans every day, thwarting them, which is "a concrete contribution to getting to the main day that we are all waiting for and fighting for – Victory Day."

"And no Russian strikes - neither missile strikes in Rivne Oblast, nor artillery in Kharkiv Oblast, Sumy Oblast, nor any possible weapons used in the Donbas - will bring Russia results," Zelensky said.

Earlier Ukraine's General Staff reported that the enemy was preparing to resume its offensive in the Sloviansk and Lyman areas. In the Donetsk area, the enemy is also trying to break through the defenses of Ukrainian troops and reach the administrative borders of Luhansk Oblast.

On May 15, Luhansk Governor Serhiy Haidai announced that only 10% of the oblast remained under Ukrainian control. The invaders continue to regularly shell the town of Sievierodonetsk.

On May 21, Haidai said that the Russians had destroyed a bridge between the towns of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk.

On May 13, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said Russia's war against Ukraine was entering a protracted phase. According to the minister, Russia had suffered a strategic defeat by May 9.
