Ukrainian border guards know a thing or two about keeping unwanted people out – and they proved that yesterday in Bakhmut.

Russian invasion forces are trying to break through the defense line in Bakhmut, but Ukrainian border guards are holding back their advance, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported on April 4.

“The Ukrainian defenders are making titanic efforts to hold back the advance of Russian-occupation forces in the fortress city of Bakhmut,” the statement said.

The enemy, despite its losses, is attempting to break through the defense line and is sending in new waves of infantry to replace those who have been neutralized.

“In recent days, enemy forces attempted to storm one of the border guards' strongholds in the fortress city of Bakhmut,” the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported.

Fighting for these positions was taking place under constant artillery fire from the enemy. Shelling has destroyed fortifications and most of the civilian infrastructure in the neighborhood.

Gunfights take place at extremely close range. To stop the advance of the occupiers, the State Border Guard Service fighters use grenade launchers, automatic weapons, and hand grenades.

During the fierce confrontation, each attack was repelled, and the extent of the enemy losses is still being determined.

On April 3, spokesperson for Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Eastern Group, Colonel Serhiy Cherevaty, stated that the Russian occupation forces are “far” from capturing Bakhmut, despite the statement by the leader of the Wagner Group PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, that they had already done so.

The Ukrainian ground forces commander, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, stated that he is constantly working with units carrying out tasks in the Bakhmut direction, refuting the Russian fake about the “capture” of the city.

According to the U.S. think tank Institute for the Studies of War (ISW), as of April 3, Wagner PMC mercenaries had likely captured the building of the Bakhmut city administration and will continue their attempts to consolidate control over the central part of the city, where fierce fighting continues.
