LTG Serhiy Nayev, the Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, had a phone call with Polish counterpart, LTG Tomasz Piotrowski, on Dec. 13 after Belarus had kicked off snap combat readiness drills.

The two defense chiefs discussed the security situation on the border with Belarus, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said on Telegram.

Piotrowski said he was concerned about a statement by the Belarusian army's command on advancing troops to certain areas and conducting engineering works to equip positions.

Nayev, in turn, briefed his Polish counterpart on possible scenarios for future developments, as well on the Ukrainian military’s tasks to protect the border.

He also emphasized the need to exchange operational information and coordinate joint actions.

According to him, the situation on the border with Belarus remains stable and is under control. Ukrainian defense forces continue to implement enhanced security measures in order to quickly respond to any threat.

Piotrowski declared full political support and provision of comprehensive assistance to Ukraine from the Polish part.

Belarus began snap drills to check  the combat readiness of its troops in line with the orders of dictator Alexander Lukashenko on Dec. 13. The Belarusian Council of Security reported that one of the military units was assigned the task of covering an object on the southern border.

On the same day, units of the 38th separate airborne assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Belarus took off from the point of permanent deployment in Brest. They are moving southeast toward the border with Ukraine’s Volyn Oblast.

Later that day, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets, capable of carrying Kinzhal missiles, arrived in Belarus.

Currently, the army of Belarus does not take direct part in the war against Ukraine. However, Lukashenko’s regime provided that country’s territory for Russian troops to attack Kyiv in February 2022. Russia also uses Belarusian territory for strikes at civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.
